Group Maker

The group maker splits a class into random groups in one click — either a fixed number of groups, or groups of a fixed size. It handles the awkward arithmetic when the class does not divide evenly, can nominate a leader for each group, and prints as a clean handout. Nothing you type leaves your device.

How to use the group maker

  1. Add your students

Paste the class list, one name per line, and press Add Students. You can also import a .txt or .csv file; header lines from a previously exported group list are skipped automatically.

  2. Choose how to split

Pick By Group Count to say how many groups you want, or By Group Size to say how many students should be in each. The tool works out the rest and spreads any remainder evenly.

  3. Set the options

Change the group name prefix if you use something other than 'Group', and turn on Assign Leaders to mark one random member of each group as leader.

  4. Create the groups

Press Create Groups, or use Ctrl+G. Not happy with the mix? Press Recreate to reshuffle. Every arrangement is kept in History, so you can go back to an earlier one.

  5. Share the result

Copy a single group to the clipboard, export all groups as a text file, or press Print for a handout — printing shows only the group cards, not the rest of the page.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my class does not divide evenly?
The remaining students are spread across the groups rather than piled into the last one, so group sizes differ by at most one. The summary line shows the average, smallest and largest group so you can check at a glance.
Can I get a different arrangement?
Yes. Press Recreate as many times as you like — each press reshuffles from scratch. Every arrangement is stored in History, so if an earlier one was better you can load it back.
Can I print the groups for the wall?
Yes. The Print button prints only the group cards — the navigation, the input panels and the footer are all left off the page, so you get a clean handout.
How are group leaders chosen?
If Assign Leaders is on, one member of each group is picked at random and marked with a Leader badge. It is re-drawn every time you create or recreate the groups.
